Yorkton is a city located in the province of Saskatchewan, Canada. It serves as the administrative center for the Regional Municipality No. 18 (RM 18) and has a population of approximately 16,343 people according to the 2021 census.

Geography

The City of Yorkton lies in Yorkton casino eastern Saskatchewan at an elevation of about 440 meters above sea level. It is situated near the confluence of the Souris River and the Boissevain Creek within the Prairie Pothole region, which makes it prone to flooding during heavy rainfall events. The surrounding landscape features a mix of agricultural land and natural areas with some pockets of boreal forest.

History

Yorkton was founded in 1882 by David Tunnell as part of the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) expansion plans into western Canada. Initially named « Prairie City, » it later became known as Yorkton, reportedly named after a CPR official or possibly from a Scottish place name referring to the Battle of Yarrow in Scotland.

Early Growth and Development

During its early years, Yorkton served primarily as an agricultural center due to its rich soil quality and access to water resources. The city’s economy expanded during World War I with the establishment of military bases in the area, including Camp 29 which later became part of the Canadian Forces Base (CFB) at Shilo.
